How the Daggerheart RPG Works

The Daggerheart RPG’s mechanics are story-first. While, like most RPGs, the game is built on a set of rules and mechanics for character interactions and combat, the core focus of the game is to help the story progress through collaboration between players and the GM.

Hope and Fear Rolls

Daggerheart RPG uses Hope and Fear to shape the story at the table. This innovative mechanic means that certain actions require you to roll two D12s, one representing Hope and the other Fear.

Rolling higher for Hope gets you Hope points, which can be spent on special actions. Rolling higher for Fear, meanwhile, gives the GM Fear points which can allow them to complicate the narrative.

Card-Driven System

Daggerheart’s card-driven character system makes key abilities easy to reference during play. Cards represent your abilities, spells, and your character’s background, helping players keep track of important points and keep the story rolling.
